There are lots of tomato varieties - more than I can grow in a lifetime but I am trying pretty hard.
Below is the list of the 135 varieties I grew this year. The descriptions come from the seed sellers - their words - not mine. I am often sucked in by their descriptions, pictures and most of all, names.
I had to grow Stump of the World - I had to grow Sara's Galapagos.
Oh well, at least it's my favorite pastime - growing tomatoes for the mountains - our Holy Grail.

Amateur’s Dream - 65 days Siberia. Round, red, rather large tomatoes with a bright crimson color inside. 5 ft. vines. Seeds Trust 1st year saved seeds
Amish Paste – 80-90 days – Wisconsin – This large, meaty heirloom was discovered in Wisconsin although it hails from the Pennsylvania Amish. It has a superior taste, brilliant with a nice balance of sweet and acid. Excellent fresh or in sauces. Seeds of Change
Arkansas Traveler Red Tomato - 80-90 days Round to ovate fruits vary in size, but are average chicken-egg size. Incredibly delicious. Very tolerant to high heat and humidity, diseases, dry periods and cracking. Excellent for eating fresh, canning, stewing, dehydrating. Fruit stores and ships well, hence the name, “Traveler”. Large, open seed chambers make seed saving easy. Firm, thick-walled flesh. 5-petaled flowers on 5-6’ vines. Killed by freezing. Tender perennial, grown as an annual crop. Open Pollinated Heirloom. Aurora – 65 days – Siberia - Five stars for flavor! At a taste test of dozens of tomatoes, someone shouted, “Oh my gosh! This is a tomato!” One of our best sellers. Scarlet round 2-3 oz. fruits. Seeds Trust
Aussie – 85 days – Australia – Heirloom This is one of those varieties to grow when you want a really big impressive red tomato to show off to your friends. This fruit is huge, at least a pound or two, and borne abundantly on large, vigorous plants. Its flavor is as big as its size, bursting with a blend of sugars and acids – a full old-fashioned tomato taste. Tomato Growers
Azoychka – 70 days – Russia – This is a delightful small yellow beefsteak tomato that matures so early it will be one of the first varieties to ripen in your garden. Beautifully smooth, lemon yellow fruit weighs about 8 ozs. and is very flavorful, rich but pleasantly sweet with a delicious hint of citrus. Heirloom variety from Russia. Beefsteak - 70 days - Huge Beefsteak-type tomato with vigor and disease tolerance. Very firm and flavorful. Produced in abundance on strong vines.
Better Boy Hybrid – 75 days Produces a bushel of fruit per plant. Guinness record holder – 342 lbs. of fruit from one plant! Deep red and meaty, up to a pound each. Dense foliage cover, too. Gurney’s
Black From Tula – 70-80 days – Russia A unique, large, 8-12 oz. dark tomato exhibiting a rich, deep purplish brown color. Some seed savers say it is the best tasting of all the dark tomatoes. Very rich, old-fashioned flavor, sweet and spicy. A rare Russian heirloom. Seed Savers Exchange + 1st year saved seed
Black Krim – 69 days - A most unusual novelty. Fruits are a dark, deep red (almost shiny black) with heavy green shoulders. Interior is a deep, reddish-green color. Sweet and tasty. Matures extremely early. Totally Tomatoes
Black Pear – 80 days – Dark brown tomatoes are shaped like miniature pears and flavored with and excellent, rich taste. Potato-leaved plants produce an abundance pf these beautiful, 4-6oz. fruit, perfect for cutting up for salads or using as a unique addition to platters. Heirloom variety. Tomato Growers
Blush – 75-80 days A unique “julienne” cherry tomato from breeder Fred Hempel with an unforgettable tropical sweet flavor reminiscent of pineapple. Widely adapted with heavy fruit set over an extended period. Seeds of Change
Brandywine – 85 days Excellent, full-tomato flavor has kept this Amish heirloom a favorite for generations! Expect delicious 3”, 1 lb. fruits on un-staked, indeterminate vines with potato leaves. Seeds Trust
Bread and Salt – Russia Named for the long held tradition in Russia to give special guests a loaf of bread and salt as they arrive. In Russian culture bread is associated with hospitality and salt has an association with long friendship. Forget bread and just give your guests this tomato, they will love it! Caro Rich - 75-80 days - A large, orange-yellow beefsteak with 10-12 oz. fruits. The flavor is full, low in acid, sweet and rich. Smooth skin, slightly ribbed and blemish free. No problems with cracking. Excellent salad tomato. The best part about Caro Rich is they have ten times as much beta-carotene than most other tomatoes. A good producer in cooler climates. Ceylon – 80 days A tomato like you’ve probably ever seed before, these small, ruffled red fruit are unique in appearance. Their taste is rich and assertive, slightly sweet with a bit of a zing added in. Only about 2” across, these flattened scalloped tomatoes appear in great profusion, perfect for salad or as a garnish. Chadwick Cherry - 80 days Delicious, sweet flavor makes this 1-oz. cherry popular with home gardeners. Large vines set huge yields and are disease resistant. Developed by the late horticultural expert Alan Chadwick. He sure had a winner with this one! Baker Creek
Cherokee Purple – 80 days – Cherokee is a recently popular heirloom that is known for its multiple disease tolerance and wide adaptability. It’s the perfect home garden tomato. The abundant purple-red, beefsteak shaped fruits are firm with dark flesh and very flavorful. Excellent fruit to use for salads, juices, relishes, canning and cooking. The plant is large with an indeterminate habit that will provide a longer fruit production. BBB Seeds
Costoluto Fiorentino – 80 days – Italy - This Italian heirloom variety from the Tuscany region produces loads of bright red tomatoes with terrific flavor. Tomatoes are typically about 8 ozs, but may be larger, with a smooth shape rather than the heavily ribbed shape typical of Costoluto Genovese. The flavor is high in sugar, but also high in acid, making for outstanding taste that’s wonderful fresh or made into sauces. Tomato Growers
Costoluto Genovese 80 days – Italy – The fluted, old Italian favorite has been around since the early 19th century. Fruit are rather flattened and quite attractive with their deep ribbing. This variety is a standard for Italy for both fresh eating and preserving, known for its intensely flavorful, deep red flesh. This variety has also become very popular with chefs in this country. Coyote – 50 days – This tiny tomato made its way from Mexico to Pennsylvania and is now cultivated all over. A tiny tomato with a big taste, you just can’t stop popping them into your mouth like candy. They need plenty of room and lots of good support to grow on. The fruits are born in clusters of 6-8 fruits. Sustainable Seed Company
De Barrao II - 67 days Siberia Pretty pear-shaped 3”, 6-8 oz. Roma-type tomatoes named for the hat the Russian cavalry once wore. One of our favorites because it stores so well. Great fresh or cooked in sauce. Seeds Trust
Delicious 77 days – Set the world record for size – over 7 pounds! You may be lucky enough to harvest the tomato that beats the record, but even if not, most of your crop will be plump, meaty fruits that weigh well over a pound. The name describes the taste – flavorful, juicy and just plan delicious. Fruit resists cracking and stores for weeks. Indeterminate plants produce huge yields. Gurney
Early Girl Improved Hybrid – 60 days Ask any greenhouse around here what the best selling tomato is, they will tell you Early Girl. Modest-sized plants mature rapidly and begin to yield 4-6 oz. fruit within a couple of months of transplanting. Yield will continue to be good until frost, so this may be the only one you need. It is a nice juicy tomato with a rich, red color, loose texture, and fine sweet flavor. Pinetree
Early Siberian - 64 days Siberia Small, early beefsteak with “an unusual lemony zest”. Slightly flattened, deeply veined, 4-5oz., reddish-orange fruits. Shorter, bushy indeterminate plants. Seeds Trust 1st year saved seed
Fox Cherry - 80-90 days – Delicious, large, red, heirloom cherry tomatoes that seem to be one of the best-tasting large cherries around. The vining plants are very reliable; even in years when the wilt kills about everything else these seem to do great. The fruit weigh about 1 oz. each and are perfect for salads. Baker Creek
Galina - 59 days Siberia – Arguably our most flavorful tomato. Galina’s was chosen one of the 10 best early tomatoes in Organic Gardening Magazine. Harvest baskets of flavor-packed, round, yellow 1” cherry tomatoes from each vigorous plant. Seeds Trust – 1st year saved
German Giant – 77 days This family heirloom variety produces an abundance of deep pink tomatoes that are just huge and brimming with luscious flavor. The plant’s potato-leaved foliage may remind you of Brandywine, but this one matures fruit that are earlier, larger and more plentiful than those of Brandywine. German Giant tomatoes are smooth in shape, 2 lbs. or more, and full of rich but sweet taste that make a tomato scrumptious. Tomato Growers
German Red Strawberry – 85 days These big red oxheart tomatoes may be shaped like strawberries but are much larger. They average 10 ozs., but can grow to 1 lb. or more. Tomatoes are meaty with an excellent taste that is on the acid side. Tall plants yield an abundance of these wonderful fruits. Heirloom variety. Ghost Cherry – 75 days Larger than a typical cherry, this fuzzy ivory-colored tomato is sweet and delicious. Extremely productive plants yield plenty of these 2” beautiful fruit, which are wonderful in salads, but tasty enough to just enjoy by themselves. Tomato Growers
Glasnost – 62 days Siberia A most beautiful tomato. A best seller. Surprisingly large, glorious 3”, 6-10 oz. fruits. Shiny smooth deep red-orange skin with dense meaty flavor. Excellent flavor. Seeds Trust
Golden Grape – Ind. – Oval Yellow Cherry Tomato
Unique, early and very productive. Very suitable for greenhouse or outdoor growing. Bite-size fruits resemble Thompsons Seedless Grapes, but are a sunny yellow color. Killed by freezing. Golden King of Siberia – Russia – Big, lemon-yellow fruit are a delightful heart shape. The flesh is smooth, creamy and has a nicely balanced sweet taste. I always find myself “snacking” on these one-pound beauties. Plants are very productive and seem to have some disease resistance. Thanks to Russia for this really great yellow type. Baker Creek
Green Zebra – 75 days – One of my favorite tomatoes. Beautiful chartreuse with deep lime-green stripes, very attractive. Flesh is bright green and very rich tasting, sweet with a sharp bite to it (just too good to describe!). A favorite tomato of many high-class chefs, specialty markets, and home gardeners. Yield is excellent. The most striking tomato in our catalog, a real beauty. Around 3 ozs. This is the tomato colored for the Green Bay Packers. Gregori’s Altai – 67 days – Siberia Another award winner in Organic Gardening Magazine. Smooth, dense meaty interior slices paper-thin. Large, 4”, purple-red, 8-10 oz. fruits with home-picked flavor. Seeds Trust
High Country – 60 days - Montana Each single plant produces over 100 medium size 3-4 oz. fruits with flesh thick enough for use in sauces and pastes. Delicious also fresh-picked. Seeds Trust 1st year savedHoney Pearl – 90 days – Ind. Extremely small and flavorful pearl to marble sized Tomato berries are the perfect size for finger popping and for chickens to eat. Sweet and spicy flavor. Vigorous vines are prolific and early ripening with clusters of small white fruits, which fully ripen, to a pale golden color, ripen quickly and store a long time and don’t weigh down the plants. Ildi – 68 days - These lovely oval yellow cherries are about the size of a large grape, with a well-balanced flavor that is a delicious combination of sweet and acid. Indigo Rose – 70 days Oregon A new release from the breeding program of Jim Myers, Oregon State University Beautiful eye-catching hues of deep purple where sunshine hits to red/orange where a leaf or stem shields an area from the sun. The saladette-sized fruits; the deep purple colored skins and surrounding tissue are extremely high in anthocyanin. A classically bred tomato like Indigo Rose is the result of ten or more years or more painstaking selection. Nichols
Isis Candy – 67 days - This delightful variety produces yellow-gold cherry tomatoes with red marbling. Marbling varies from just a red blush to extensive streaking inside and out. What is consistent, however, is the sweet taste that is also rich and fruity, and very delicious. Tomatoes are about 1” across and are round to oblate in shape. Ispolin – 70 days Siberia Truly a giant from the Siberian need to outdo the neighbor for the largest tomato. Spectacular huge round pink 1-2 lb. fruits can be expected from vines that reach 7’. Seeds Trust
Japanese Oxheart – 90 days – This is an outstanding oxheart variety that distinguishes itself with extra high yields and richer flavor than most other pink oxhearts. Fruit weighs at least 10 oz. and may grow up to a pound or more. Shaped like a heart, these tomatoes are very juicy and flavorful while being meaty with a few seeds. Mikarda Sweet – 67 days Siberia Sweet flavor with and ever so slight acid bite. Long, pear-shaped, 3-4” 5-7 oz fruits. Seeds Trust
Mother Russia - 72 days- Siberia Fitting for a tomato named Mother Russia, these large, flavorful, pink tomatoes ripen in the shape of a perfect heart. Dense, meaty. 4”, 10-12 oz. fruits. Seeds Trust
Mr. Underwood’s Pink German Giant – 85-90 days Huge, 1 ½ - 2 lb. pink beefsteaks have an excellent, rich flavor that is sweet and delicious. In some gardens, these tomatoes routinely grow to 3 lbs. Vigorous plants offer plenty of these deeply ribbed, luscious fruits that are indeed a giant. Heirloom variety. Tomato Growers
Mr. Stripey – 56 days (Tigerella) Huge crops of red fruits with clearly defined yellow-orange stripes. 1-1/2 to 2 inch tomatoes have a rich, tangy flavor and are a beautiful novelty for adding whole or cutting into salads. The American Heritage Seed Company Conifer, Co
Nepal – 78 days Nepal Enormous, cold-tolerant beefsteak with intense, rich, tomato flavor. Original strain from Himalayan Mountains in Nepal! Bright-red, smooth, 10-12 oz. fruits. Seeds Trust
Ninety Wonder – Large Red Cherry Tomato Ping-pong ball sized fruits with sprawling semi-upright vines. Very hardy to light frosts and summertime heat, as well as to very dry conditions. Seed may be direct sown in early spring with a long-growing season, otherwise start seeds in containers in soil in Feb-Mar. Produces many clusters of bright red delicious fruits which keep for a long time and are resistant to cracking and mold. It may become established as a volunteer where seed has spilled from previous seasons. Plant is killed by freezing. Open Pollinated annual/freeze-sensitive perennial. Opalka – 83 days A very large tomato that has the appearance of a bull’s horn with massive solid fruit. Definitely a paste tomato with a dry texture and low seed count, it will become one of the more unique plants in your garden. This heirloom tomato is amazing to behold and difficult to find. If you grow tomatoes for paste, this is the one to grow. Pinetree
Orenburg Giant – 75 days - Russia Originally from the European Russia but tested in Siberia by Dr. Andriev. Nearly round beautiful crimson fruit weighs from ¾ -3 lbs. with “wonderful flavor”. Seeds Trust
Peacevine Cherry 70-80 days Prolific tresses of delicious red fruits. Complex flavor begins tart and finishes sweet. Found by independent research to be extremely high in vitamin C and gamma-amino butyric acid, a body sedative that calms jitters. Seeds of Change
Perestroika – 67 days - Siberia Perfect, picture book roundness and smooth skin have conspired to make Perestroika a market garden favorite. Solid 8-10 oz. red-orange fruits with few seeds. Seeds Trust
Pink Brandywine Tomato An Amish Heirloom Tomato with Salmon-pink skin and red flesh with a very meaty heart. Potato-leaf variety with large, simple leaves and double 10-petaled yellow flowers. The thin-skinned fruits may weigh up to a pound each. Voted world over as “The World’s Best Tasting Tomato”. Produces better in cooler climates than in hot regions, but will fare well if given afternoon shade in intense hear. Open Pollinated pure strain. Annual. Authentically grown in, Colorado ThunderFoot
Red Calabash – 80-90 days Delicious, thin-skinned, ruffled fruit may have come from Chiapas State in Mexico. Documented as the variety in a 1793 painting by Raphael Paele in Penn. The small fruits look like miniature beefsteak tomatoes. Seeds of Change – 1st year saved.
Red Fig – 85 days Philadelphia heirloom documented to 1805. Heavy yields of 1 1/2 “ pear-shaped fruits that are great for fresh eating. Used as a substitute for figs years ago by gardeners who would pack crates of dried tomatoes for winter use. Seed Savers Exchange
Red Pear - 78 days Bright red, pear-shaped, 2” long fruit borne in clusters. Excellent for canning, sauce, juicing, and salads. Produced throughout a long season. Tomato Growers 1st year saved seed
Red Siberian – 70 days Siberia - Many fruits weigh over 1 lb. Perfectly shaped, crimson fruits with the characteristically good Siberian tomato flavor. “A glorious tomato.” Seeds Trust
Riesenstraube – 76-80 days - Germany This old German heirloom was offered in Philadelphia by the mid-1800’s. The sweet red 1 oz. fruit grow in large clusters and the name means “Giant Bunch of Grapes” in German. Large plants produce massive yields. Baker Creek
Riesetomate – The most novel tomato we have seen, this tomato is like a big bunch of cherry tomatoes all fused together: an amazing trait that had everyone here asking questions about the alien-looking bumpy tomatoes. Also called “Traveler Tomato” (“reise” is German for travel or “journey”) for the ability to tear it apart a piece at a time, with no need for a knife. This type of tomato traces it’s roots to Central America where the native people would carry traveler tomatoes on trips – to eat as they walked. Bright red tomatoes taste – well, rather sour, strong and acid. The perfect tomato for those who love raw lemons, but who cares? They are still far-out and groovy. Baker Creek
San Marzano - 90 days - Paste Heirloom Highly productive and extensively grown for canning whole, for puree and making tomato paste. Fine if peeled whole for salads. Fruits are intense red, rectangular-shaped, 3 1/2 “ long and 1 ½” across, meaty, free from juicy pulp of very mild flavor. (Thought by some to make the world’s finest sauce.) American Heritage
Santa Clara Canner – 80 days Good yields of 10-12 oz. reddish-orange beefsteaks. This variety was once used in the California canning industry. Westcliffe Seed Lending Library Bob’s Tomatoes
Sara’s Galapagos – 75 days – This special currant tomato is only ½ inch wide, but packed with tons of sweet flavor in its very small size. The seed was originally collected in the wild by Amy Goldman on a trip to the Galapagos with her daughter, Sara. Large plants are prolific, bearing long trusses of tiny red intensely flavored fruit. Principe Borghese – 78 days – Italy This is Italy’s tomato for sun drying. It is very small (1-2 oz.), plum shaped, and pointed at one end. Fruits are born in large clusters of several dozen, like grapes. They are meaty with little juice and branches can be hung to dry until leathery. Italians just throw the vines over a fence. We’ve had success in our cool, wet climate with slicing them in half and drying them in an oven with just the pilot light. Riesetomate – The most novel tomato we have seen, this tomato is like a big bunch of cherry tomatoes all fused together: an amazing trait that had everyone here asking questions about the alien-looking bumpy tomatoes. Also called “Traveler Tomato” (“reise” is German for travel or “journey”) for the ability to tear it apart a piece at a time, with no need for a knife. Principe Borghese – 78 days – Italy This is Italy’s tomato for sun drying. It is very small (1-2 oz.), plum shaped, and pointed at one end. Fruits are born in large clusters of several dozen, like grapes. They are meaty with little juice and branches can be hung to dry until leathery. Italians just throw the vines over a fence. We’ve had success in our cool, wet climate with slicing them in half and drying them in an oven with just the pilot light.
